Taking a sip of wine in the middle of a vineyard is incredibly gratifying, especially when it's moments from a bustling city center like Vienna's. There are two hills within the city: Nussberg and Reisenberg, which each have spectacular vistas of the skyline and the Danube. Both Heuriger Mayer am Nussberg, which has just reopened after two years, and Heuriger Wieninger, are authentic Heurige (wine taverns) atop Nussberg. I love to stretch out on one of Heuriger Mayer's red deckchairs with a glass of wine and admire the season's crop. On Reisenberg hill, when the weather is good, vintners Matthias Hengl and Peter Uhler "unfold" their weekend pop up winery amidst trees and vineyards.
Bottom's up! ~Barbara
